Choosing the Right Material for Your Project
When investing in vinyl graphics, the manufacturing process of the material determines its lifespan, performance, and price. At ATX Print Services, we match the right vinyl to your specific application to ensure maximum ROI.
Cast Vinyl (The Premium Choice for Vehicle Wraps)
Cast vinyl is considered the “gold standard” for professional vehicle wraps. It starts as a liquid and is “cast” onto a moving web, resulting in a thin, stable film with no “memory.”
Best for: Full vehicle wraps, deep channels, rivets, and complex curves.
Durability: Typically lasts 5–8 years even in the harsh Austin sun.
Key Advantage: It does not shrink. Because it was never stretched during manufacturing, it won’t pull back from the edges or “pop” out of your vehicle’s body lines.
Thickness: Very thin (approx. 2.0 mil), allowing it to feel like paint once applied.
Calendered Vinyl (Ideal for Flat Surfaces)
Calendered vinyl is made by extruding a heated PVC mass through giant rollers (calenders). This “rolls” the vinyl into a sheet, similar to how pasta is made.
Best for: Flat storefront windows, yard signs, and floor graphics.
Durability: Typically lasts 1–3 years depending on UV exposure.
Key Advantage: It is thicker and stiffer (approx. 3.0–4.0 mil), making it easier to handle for DIY applications on flat surfaces.
The Trade-off: Because it was “stretched” into shape during manufacturing, it has a “memory.” Over time, especially in Texas heat, it wants to shrink back to its original shape, which can lead to peeling at the edges if used on vehicle curves.
Which do you need?
If you are branding a commercial fleet or wrapping a work truck, we exclusively recommend Cast Vinyl (like 3M 180mc or Avery Dennison MPI 1105). For temporary promotional window decals or flat signage, Calendered Vinyl is a cost-effective, high-quality alternative.
